Vocabulary lesson with science terms

Chemistry of Matter, sec. 3-1 (p.64-72)

Knowledge Rating Scale

Goal: To help students link vocabulary to their background knowledge.

Purpose: Get the students curious about these vocabulary words by handing out the Knowledge Rating Scale sheet with vocabulary words listed on one side.

Procedures: -Students will work in groups to provide an opportunity to share background knowledge with classmates.

-Have students look at each word carefully and mark an X in the appropriate box.

-If they can define the word, mark an X in the first column.

-If they have heard it or seen it, but are unsure of the meaning, X in the second box.

-If they are totally unfamiliar, mark the third box.

-After they have completed the scale, write definitions for words they marked in the Know it Well column.

-Discuss words that the students know well.

*Where have you heard that word before?

*Did you make any connections with the words?

-Students can add definitions or change them as we progress in the chapter.
