inquiry- What does the word, "quality" mean? (Ex.
Value, worth, caliber) How is "high quality" different
from "low quality"? Write these terms on the overhead.
Write student responses as well.
What is a "task"? (Something you have to do)
How big is 6 inches? What do you think a "6 inch
voice" would mean? (You are only 6 inches away from the
people next to you)
Strategies- activate prior knowledge- If you needed
surgery, would you want a high quality hospital? Or a low
quality? Why?
*Brainstorm- What does a quality classroom look like?
Brainstorm at your tables, write down ideas. (Ex. Students on
task, prompt)
Share with whole group- what ideas did your group think of?
Write these terms on the overhead. Write student responses as well.

*Brainstorm- What does a quality classroom feel like?

Inquiry- Is it important to have quality work in a quality
classroom? Why?
Scenario 1– Elena is reading a comic book during class.
Is she part of a quality classroom? Why?
Scenario 2– Jodie is yelling across the room to her
friend Helene. Is she part of a quality classroom? Why?
Scenario 3- Sandy did not do her homework last night. Did
she do quality work? Why?
Assessment Closure: What qualities do you have to
contribute to this quality classroom?
What qualities can you improve to make this
classroom higher quality?
Collect responses.
Rationale for primary strategy- I am using inquiry and brainstorming
as the two main strategies. These are important because they stimulate
the students to think about quality. The brainstorming also provides an
opportunity to work together as a team at their table.
