Strategy Predict-o-gram (see worksheet)

Describe the strategy: Students will focus on vocabulary and chart the words in the appropriate box (setting, action, characters, etc.) After reading, students check how their chart compares with the text. Students may move words to proper places.

Objectives:

1. The students will use prior knowledge before reading to enhance comprehension of text.

Procedures:

1. List the following words on the board: Birmingham, teasing, traveling, racism, church, Byron, Rufus, friendship, grieving, bomb, Kenny, near death experience, Flint, Weird Watsons, discrimination, prejudice. (They are also noted on the worksheet. Draw chart on board also.)

2. Students write them in the appropriate box in their chart based on their predictions.

3. Make a large set of boxes on the board.

4. Fill in Predict-O-Gram on board with student responses when most have completed.

5. Discuss why the students placed them in the specific box.
